AT&T 3G: No Worky? July 6th 2010

July 7th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in New Media, Technology

In a July 7th 2010 article AT&T admits that iPhone 4 users have been susceptible to slower speeds due to a programming issue with back hardware in certain areas of the US.

“”AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent jointly identified a software defect — triggered under certain conditions – that impacted uplink performance for Laptop Connect and smartphone customers using 3G HSUPA-capable wireless devices in markets with Alcatel-Lucent equipment,” said Jenny Bridges, a spokeswoman for the company.

Since the iPhone is currently the only smartphone that AT&T offers that is using HSUPA, AT&T said that the problem only affects a small number of its wireless customers, which includes some laptop data sticks users, who also use the HSUPA technology.” — taken from CNET article July 7th 2010

My girlfriend (Jessica L. Titus) and I were at the Apple Store in Leawood, KS on July 6th 2010 trying out the AT&T based iPhone 4 and found that we couldn’t connect to anything internet based without the help of wifi. We tried the app store, itunes store, pandora and many other web based apps on the iPhone 4. Without a good connection to AT&T’s 3G we pretty much found the iPhone 4 useless for anything other then text messages. At iPhone 4′s $199 and $299 subsistized pricing and based on a unlimited AT&T plan running at over $100 a month texting is expensive!

We made a little video of our experiences with the iPhone 4 and AT&T’s lack luster service found here:

LogMeIn iPhone App – Reviewed by David A. Poe

December 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in General, New Media, Technology, iphone

In this video I review the LogMeIn.com LogMeIn app for the iphone. Overall the app is very useful and will be a very handy tool for me. The LogMeIn iPhone app does have a bit of a memory issue and the app has crashed several times as well as locked my iPhone up once. I do think that despite these issues the app is well worth the $29.99 price tag. I hope to see LogMeIn improve on this already great app!

redbox

May 31st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Food, General, New Media, Technology

Started in 2002 redbox is automated video rental service that was initially funded by McDonald’s Ventures, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of McDonald’s Corp. Redbox has 8,000 locations in McDonald’s, Wal-Mart’s, airports, grocery stores as well as a few free standing units (open air kiosks).

For some reason I just never rented from redbox until about a month ago. I’ve seen the redbox and even touched it’s niffty touch screen, but never thought, “hmm I want to rent from this”. Heck, I’ve even given away my free rental tickets that where sold on McD’s items around the holidays and on other items at other times. Either way I was just never compelled to rent from this unit. I don’t really rent movies that often. If it’s not on cable then I just wait. When iTune’s started it’s online rental service, I started renting a couple movies here and there. I guess it hit me one day that $1.00 redbox rentals, make more sense then $.99 to $4.99 on iTunes. So I ventured out and rented. So far I have been pretty happy with my experience.

I did find one issue that bothered me a bit when I rented Die Hard last weekend. The disc that I got was the “formatted screen version” instead of wide screen. Not sure if it’s just hit or miss on what version you get or if someone traded discs, but it seems there should be some sort of explination as you rent as to what you are getting “wide screen” or ‘formatted screen”.

Another thing is that the discs and the disc carriers are always pretty dirty. Lot’s of greasy, dirty hand prints all over the place. I’m a bit of a germaphobe, so this is just something that I tend to notice.

Beyond those two issues I’ve got to say so far so good. McD’s has a coupon deal going on right now for a free rental if you buy a large drink for $1.00 or up-size to large when buying a meal.

Go for it!
